State of Iowa Governor’s Mansion and Residence
Full Renovation: Furniture, Finishes, Cabinetry, Lighting, Flooring, and Styling
One of my first projects with OPN Architects, a complete mold mitigation of the 3rd floor private residence for Governor Terry Branstad and First Lady Chris Branstad. All the beautiful, original crown molding and architectural details were removed; and all walls were taken down to studs to remove dangerous mold that had accumulated, creating a very unsafe living area for the Governor and his family.
A blessing in disguise, because the demolition gave me the opportunity to replace the original drab, dark, and dated colors, materials, and furnishings, with light, airy and more functional living spaces. A modern kitchen, gorgeous master bathroom and beautiful dining space were some of the highlights. We did several additional bedrooms and bathrooms as well. Unfortunately, I don’t have any “before” photos, but imagine burgundy everywhere, a really bizarre sunken tub, and a kitchen only the Addams Family could love.
This project also threw me into the world of residential interiors, even though I was working as a commercial interior designer. A world I eventually gave into years later as I came to realize, if your lucky, your true passion will never truly release you. I am blessed to this day to have listened to that inner voice and so thankful that my career path began with this amazing project.
